Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how DivorceMaybe works.

Is DivorceMaybe free?

Yes. Joining, posting in the community forum, and privately messaging any verified counselor or family lawyer are free. You sign up with a display name — no real name needed, and a throwaway email works.

How do you verify lawyers and counselors?

A person on our team checks every professional with their regulator before their listing goes live — the Law Society of BC for lawyers; the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC, or the BC College of Social Workers for counselors — and records their registration number. The professional also reviews and consents to their listing. Only then does the "Verified" badge appear. How we verify.

Do you give legal advice?

No. DivorceMaybe is a directory and community — not a law firm. Information on the site is for orientation only. Talk to a verified lawyer for advice on your situation.

I'm in an abusive relationship. Is it safe to use this site?

We built the Safety hub with you in mind. There's a one-tap Quick Exit button, BC help lines (911, VictimLinkBC 1-800-563-0808 by call or text, 9-8-8), browsing-safety tips, and a moderated "Leaving safely" forum. Use a private browser window.

I run a law firm. Can I list the whole firm?

Yes — create a firm after registering. Each member of the firm appears on the firm page, and listings can be tied to the firm so clients see your full team.

Can I post anonymously in the forum?

Your DivorceMaybe display name appears on posts — you choose what that is. Don't use your full real name if privacy matters. Threads in the "Leaving safely" forum are moderated for de-identification.

How does pricing work for professionals?

Family lawyers list free; paid lawyer plans will only open after the Law Society of BC has confirmed our flat-fee model. Counselors list free during launch, then pay a flat monthly listing fee. We never take a commission, referral or per-lead fee on legal work; the only percentage anywhere is an optional 10% convenience fee on counseling sessions booked through the site. See Pricing for pros.

My community isn't represented in the forum. What do I do?

Email us via the contact form. We have sub-forums for South Asian / desi, women, LGBTQ+, and faith-based discussions, and we keep adding more as users ask.
